Mystery of the Oil Slick

Originally published at Misangela.com. Please leave any comments there.

Yesterday, I go out to get the mail and notice this HUGE oil slick on the driveway:

Since that is sort of where the truck is parked every night, I was alarmed and contacted Nick to go and check his truck immediately. He did, and said he saw nothing obviously leaking. We decided better safe than sorry, so he arranged to take the truck in for a check later in the afternoon.

I’d also noticed a maroon vehicle in front of my house – which Nick said was there when he left in the morning. Hmmm… Someone picked up the car in the afternoon, so I thought no more of it.

We were talking about where else the oil could’ve come from and I remembered that the fridge repair guy had been there the day before – but I hadn’t noticed the oil then, so chances were slim it was his van.

Nick takes in the truck, it checks out fine and he comes home. He checked out the oil (which had dissipated significantly in the heat) and checked out where the car had been parked in front of our house. He saw that there were clear drip lines coming down the street, into our drive, back out and then another huge oil slick in the street where the car had been.

Well, ok, that explains the oil, but still?? So then it occurred to me that our newspaper delivery person always pulls into the drive and I seem to recall them driving a red or maroon car. If their seals let go as they were delivering papers, it’d make sense that they’d just park it and come for it later. But ODD just the same. Whoever it was has some serious repairs to do!

There’s always some weird shit to keep you entertained in the ‘hood. I really wish they’d not left a huge oil stain on my driveway. :/

  4. If flowers could talk (think Alice In Wonderland), which flower would you most like to converse with?
  5. Have you ever used edible flowers in cooking, or eaten one?

Do What You Love, by Paige Jones

Oh my gosh, I’m so, so honored to be included in Paige Jones‘ photo series, Do What You Love!!

With Michael, her husband, providing lighting assistance, she spent a couple hours photographing me working at Periscope Studio several weeks ago -You can see me penciling and inking my queer comic, if you’re into behind-the-scenes stuff!

In Paige’s words:

Do What You Love.

It’s a core belief Michael and I try to live by.

So. It only makes sense that we’re drawn to those who share this idea.

Enter, this series.

It’s a personal project for us. Finding others who are KILLIN’ it, living life, doing what they love. And then photographing them.

Go see the whole photoshoot on her site!

Good News, Bad News

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/wwdn/~3/WkDNLkpLesY/good-news-bad-news.html

I've been seeing lots of messages on Twitter and Facebook from people who are really excited to come see me tell stories and perform at the upcoming Denver Comicon. I love it that so many people are excited to see me do my thing... and I feel terrible that I have to cancel my attendance this year.

I am under an NDA, so I can't disclose exactly why at the moment, but I got an absolutely AMAZING job that conflicts with the convention, and there just wasn't a way to make the schedules work out.

I don't cancel convention appearances lightly, because I know how disappointing it is for the people who are attending. I assure you that this isn't a ploy to win a game of Mystic Warlords of Ka'a, or even a bowling match... this is just something that happens from time to time when someone like me is lucky enough to land a dream job that conflicts with a planned trip out of town.

I'm really sorry, and I hope you still have a great time at the con. Hopefully, I'll be able to be there next year.

Memories of the Phoenix Comicon 2012

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/wwdn/~3/LvG33nA4vew/memories-of-the-phoenix-comicon-2012.html

In about 22 hours, I leave for Origins Game Fair in Ohio. I've wanted to go to this convention since I was in high school, and I'm really excited to finally be attending.

Felicia and I are doing a bunch of TableTop stuff, and the organizers have even set aside time in our busy schedules for some gaming. If you're coming to the con, I'd love to accept any gaming dice you wish to add to my growing collection.

And now, a brief recap of the Phoenix Comicon:

I was hoping to be there Thursday through Sunday, but I got an awesome job that worked on Thursday and Friday, so I didn't get into town until Friday evening, with my wife and my son in tow.

We settled into our hotel, met up with our friends for dinner, and headed over to do the late show with Hardwick and the Nerdist crew. The podcast was entertaining, the audience was engaged, and we all stayed up WAY TOO LATE.

They gave me this IPA in the green room from O'Dell. It was cleverly named "Odell IPA." It was wonderful, and reminded me of Racer 5, with a touch of Ruination.

But the thing is, I couldn't say the name of it without cracking up and then quoting the infamous accident on the Knife Show from a few years ago. This joke carried us through the weekend, because Anne and I had a lot of O'Dell IPA while we were in town.

I went to sleep, woke up sooner than I wanted to, and made my way to the convention center. It was a merciful 80 degrees this year, instead of 184 like it was last year, which I bet made the cosplayers happy.

I signed lots of pictures and books, posed for some photos with my friends from Eureka, and then we did the Eureka panel.

Fun fact: Colin Ferguson and I are looney hockey fans. He likes the Habs, while I am Kings Fan Super Number One Top Fan Guy. But since we're both living in Los Angeles, and our team in the Stanley Cup Final, Colin suggested that we both wear Kings jerseys to the panel.

So I provided two jerseys from the early 90s:

It was so awesome to troll 4000 people. Colin walked out to raucous applause, which almost immediately turned to boo-urns when they saw what he was wearing. When I came out onstage, it was even better, because I walked to the front and really played it up. I think it was mostly taken in the spirit it was intended, which made us both feel like we'd trolled successfully.

The panel was great, and it was so wonderful to hear from so many people that Eureka was and is important to them. I'm so proud of the show, and it still stings that I only got to work on it a little bit before the network formerly known as Sci-Fi sent it off to the Land of Wind and Ghosts.

After a much-needed break for a little bit of food, I went back to signing things and meeting people. The line was ridiculous, and I did my best to get through it without making anyone feel rushed. I was not prepared for how many people wanted to meet me, and I was a little overwhelmed a lot of the time.

Storytime With Wil went better than expected. I performed a bunch of fiction, and told a couple of stories about me and Anne. I was especially happy that the audience seemed to enjoy The Monster In My Closet, and the thing I wrote about A Place Where Men Run Wild.

After storytime, we had a-fucking-mazing pizza at a place called BRICK (the wait for Pizzeria Bianco was until July), then met up with my friend April and her friends for the biggest and dirtiest game of Cards Against Humanity that I've ever played. I fell asleep at 11pm, and when I woke up at 8 on Sunday, it still wasn't enough sleep.

What the hell is that about, anyway? I thought you needed less sleep as you got older, not more. This is bullshit.

Sunday was very low key. I got there early and did a bit of shopping, including something AMAZING from Monkey Minion Press that will be revealed at the exact moment it is to be revealed, and not a second sooner. I also got a d12 Fez from Fez-o-rama, because I love the d12 and I hate that it's always in the d20's shadow. (Fun fact: that's why it's a d12 in the Tabletop logo.)

The show opened, and I did some photos with most of the Star Trek: TNG cast, before we did a huge TNG panel. There were easily 6000 people in the room of all ages, and several generations. I can't believe that, twenty-five years later, we can still get 6000 people into one room to celebrate what they love about the show. That's just awesome.

I'm sure I'm forgetting things, but those are the things that are clearest in my memory. I had a wonderful (if totally overwhelmed) time at the show, and I hope everyone who came out had a great a memorable experience. I'm already talking to the con about coming back next year.

P-Mod in Periscope Studio

http://erikamoen.com/2012/05/28/p-mod-in-periscope-studio/

http://erikamoen.com/?p=2102

This last week French photographer P-Mod stopped by Periscope Studio to snap some pictures of cartoonists at work!

Dom (P-Mod) has been one of my favorite photographers for years now, so it was such a huge honor to be featured in his pictures, for reals.

Haha, even this one ;) These last two shots are of me packaging up orders to people who have bought my books and prints and things. I like to think I was yelling “COOOOOOMIIIIIIICS” to my studiomates in this shot.

Author photo!

Periscope Studio is my other home. Aside from my apartment with Matt, this is where my heart is happiest– I think Dom did a fantastic job capturing how warm and loving this place is.

Thank you, P-Mod!!

Dandelion Head

http://erikamoen.com/2012/05/25/dandelion-head-2/

http://erikamoen.com/?p=2084

Hey, hey, another new painting! The inspiration for this one came while I was doodling some dandelion weeds in my backyard.

The original doodle in my sketchbook, the under-drawing, and the lightly penciled drawing on 300lb hot press watercolor paper.

Watercolors and gold accents completed!

All the pieces together, waiting to be assembled.

Some more trimming along the bottom edge of the painting, to make it circular. Had to be careful not to accidentally slice off one of the little dandelion heads!

Dwam snapped this of me just as I finished gluing everything together (I’m rubbing the glue off my hands in the left picture). Yay! Done! …Well, I still had to go press it overnight while the glue dried. But still! As done as it could be!

Hopefully I can bust out a new series of paintings like this over the next couple months and find a place to exhibit them!

Friday Five: May 25th 2012

Today's questions are a bunch of miscellany:

1. What's your favorite sandwich?
2. You have unlimited funds and unlimited space to make your dream abode. What and where is it, and what does it look like? Do you share it with anyone/anything?
3. If you made a movie, what would it be about and who would be in it?
4. If you were to start a charity, what would it be for?
5. What's your favorite music video? (Bonus points if you embed/link it.)

Queer Comic Prints!

http://erikamoen.com/2012/05/24/queer-comic-prints/

http://erikamoen.com/?p=2074

By popular demand, I’ve made prints of my Queer comic available! They are two feet long because that is the smallest I could make them and still keep ‘em legible.

These giclée prints are 8.5″ x 24″ on 50lb heavy matte paper that is velvet-y to the touch.

Because it is two (TWO!!) feet long, it ships rolled in a sturdy tube that should be able to withstand even the most ruthless postal worker.

Lookit the size of this! It’s, like, the length of my torso and neck! Anyway, I’m only offering this for a limited time. How long is the limited time? Man, I don’t know, until I have a new print I want to replace it with. Because that’s just how this fickle bitch rolls. ::Flips down sunglasses, somersaults away::
